A giant peace symbol made of 200 recycled CDs and yarn will be showcased at a festival in the San Geronimo Valley.

The project, assembled by dozens of Lagunitas School District students from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, will adorn a roughly 10-by-10-foot mural at the courtyard behind the San Geronimo Valley Community Center, the festival sponsor.

The mural will be unveiled Sunday, the last day of a five-day 11th annual International Day of Peace Festival at the center and surrounding areas.

“Each student will create a mini art project,” said Anna Rochester, a leader of the undertaking. “They will all be woven together to create a tapestry.”

Rochester and Barbara Libby-Steinmann designed the project, drilled tiny holes in the CDs and threaded each one with string so the students could weave the yarn around each disk.
