Application Open for Marin Youth Scholarship!

We are super excited to announce that the Marin Youth Scholarship application is now open! Marin 9 to 25 is providing $500 to 20 youth in Marin County for September 2022 - June 2023. We are looking for youth who are already participating in community programs in Marin County, or those who are interested in volunteering or participating in community work.

Scholarship recipients will meet monthly to provide updates on their work in the community and collaborate with other youth on strategies, outreach, engagement, and promotion of their activities. Youth will also help drive the agenda for Marin 9 to 25. Applications are due on August 26th.

From Compassion to Action: A Community Guide to Suicide Prevention and Support in Marin County

The Marin County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services and the Marin County Suicide Prevention Collaborative is pleased to announce the release of: "From Compassion to Action: A Community Guide to Suicide Prevention and Support in Marin County." This community guide is designed to create greater awareness and understanding of complex health issues that can be prevented together.

Directing Change Opportunity - Monthly Art Prompt Contest

The Directing Change Program offers young people the opportunity to win prizes, express their feelings, take action, and inspire others through film and art. The monthly Hope & Justice category asks young people in grades 5-12 (ages 12-25) to explore how they are coping through tough times and the change they want to see in their communities. Win up to $300 in Amazon gift cards!

Internship Opportunities Through Marin County Office of Education

The Marin County School to Career Partnership offers an Internship program for public high school students in Marin County. The program offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on workplace skills and to test their academic knowledge in a real-world setting. Internship sessions are available in the Fall, Spring, and Summer. Internships may vary depending upon the needs of the students, the needs of the employers, and the requirements of the School to Career program. Every effort is made to find an internship placement for students in one of their top three choices; however, some internships are not available every semester, and choices are limited in certain industry areas. The School to Career Liaisons coordinates with students, teachers, and employers to ensure that each student has a meaningful learning experience. Most of the internships are unpaid, although there might be some paid opportunities.

Marinterns Program through Marin County

The Marinterns program nurtures the power of individuals to make a difference, change lives, and improve the quality of life. Interns engage in real-world projects and collaborate with civic professionals, sharing a vision of the lasting legacy that is unique to public service. This unique experience allows participants to grow personally and professionally while exploring potential careers.

MORE Applications Now Open

Marin Organizing for Racial Equity is now accepting applications for the 2022-2023 year! Applications are due on August 29. Questions? Contact Mansi Kalra at mkalra@yli.org! MORE Is a program that seeks to bring youth of color and their allies together to implement and support social change efforts targeting racial justice. This work is designed to culminate in supporting existing community efforts from a youth perspective in addition to the selection of individual issues to tackle through the MORE-led design and implementation of a social change campaign.

Movie Night in Marin

Come see your friends and neighbors for a classic film every Friday night outside under the big tent at 6 pm. This coming Friday they will be showing Finding Nemo.

Drinks: Club House Caravan will be on site all night for beer & wine. Dinner: El Huarache Loco, Farmshop, Hog Island Oyster Co., Pressed Juicery, Shake Shack, Starbucks, Sushi-Ko, Tha Siam, and Rustic Bakery. Sweets: Johnny’s Doughnuts, Trading Post, and Miette. Outdoor movies run until October 28th, 2022.

Stop the Bleed Free Training

The Marin County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is combining efforts with the Marin County Emergency Medical Services Agency (Marin EMS), Marin Medical Reserve Corps (MMRC), the RxSafe Marin grassroots campaign, and those who organize Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) to host the 12th annual event Saturday, August 13. Anime Club at Novato Library

The Novato Library hosts an Anime club every second Saturday of the month. Teens between the ages of 12 and 18 can join the Anime Club! We will meet once a month to discuss and/or watch anime, create anime-inspired crafts, and more! We will sample Japanese treats, create Soot Sprites, and discuss our favorite anime series.

LGBTQ Youth Group *Mill Valley* (Recurring monthly)

LGBTQ Youth Drop-in Groups are an inclusive space to have fun and informative conversations about gender identity, sexual orientation, questioning and coming out, as well as general life, family, and school issues. Come meet other young people in your community, make new friends, and connect with others’ shared experiences.

Free Trip to Muir Woods

On Friday, August 19 there will be a community science program to learn about observing nature. Everyone will meet at Pickleweed Park at 9 am, 50 Canal Street, and will be back around 2 p.m. FREE transportation is available as well as Spanish-speaking guides. This Support Group for family and friends of LGBTQ youth is a welcoming place to discuss how best to support our queer and trans kids. It is a safe place to ask questions, seek help, and offer support to others.

Kings, Queens, and Vaccines

Join The Spahr Center at Stafford Lake Park in Novato for Kings, Queens, and Vaccines: an LGBTQ+ Community Picnic and COVID Vaccine Clinic! We'll have live music by Bobby Jo Valentine, a drag story hour hosted by the San Rafael Library, and drag performances throughout the afternoon. Bring your own picnic and blanket!

Podcasting at Terra Linda

Debate: Gun Control in the U.S.: Students at Terra Linda High School have started a podcast series called Trojan Talk. In the first installment of the show, they discussed gun control in the United States. These students have been influenced by the recent mass shooting in Texas and New York but also by the increase in shooting in the United States overall.

Students at Novato High write about the War in Ukraine

A Closer Look at Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: Reporter Sathya Chaib from The Swarm Newspaper at Novato High School wrote on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “On February 24, Russia invaded Ukraine and sent missiles toward the capital city of Kyiv, launching their attack after being monitored by NATO and the US for days. This was the latest step in the conflict between the two countries that had been going on for many years prior. This attack made many US citizens wonder how NATO and our country could be involved in the war, and many people began to debate if it would be the right decision to get involved.

What are students at Archie Williams High School doing after graduating?

College (un)bound: seniors pursue non-traditional paths after high school: Students Neve Marin Rue Galmarini and Jasmin Desruisseau from Archie Williams High School wrote about their classmates who are choosing not to attend college right out of High School. “Throughout high school, both Margot and Kalea have endured external pressures to go to college right after high school. They remembered how teachers always talk about the ‘normal’ college route. However, Kalea and Margot both think that taking a step back from traditional educational routes will benefit them and help with their lives and education in the future by allowing them to have a clear vision of what they want.”
